How to Choose Kitchen Island Pendant Lights for Your Menlo Park Remodel

Greg Belyavski • September 15, 2026

New lights can change the look of your kitchen. But how do you pick the right ones?

Pendant lights hang from the ceiling. You may want them over your kitchen island. This is where you cook, eat, or sit with friends.

Start with the size of your island. Then check the size, height, and light from each pendant. Make sure the lights work with your dimmer, too.

At Coast Lighting in Redwood City, we help you sort out these details. Our store is near Menlo Park. Bring your plans, and we can help you choose.

Think About How You Use Your Island

What do you do at your kitchen island?

You may use it to:

  • Chop food.
  • Eat a quick meal.
  • Help kids with schoolwork.
  • Talk with friends.

Tell us how you use this space. This helps us learn what you need.

Look at all your kitchen lights as one plan. Your island lights should work with the lights in the ceiling and under your cabinets.

Measure Your Space First

A light may look great in a photo. But will it fit your home?

Before you shop, write down:

  • How long your island is.
  • How wide it is.
  • How high your ceiling is.
  • How high your counter is.

Bring photos of your kitchen, too. Show us where you sit and where you cook.

If you like a light you saw online, bring the link. We need more than a photo. We need its size and the details about how it hangs.

Do You Need Two Lights or Three?

You do not have to use three lights just because you have a long island.

Think of a nine-foot island. Two large lights may look good. Three small lights may also work.

The best choice depends on the lights and your room.

Try drawing each choice on your kitchen plan. You can also cut shapes from cardboard to see how big the shades will feel.

Ask these questions:

  • Do the lights look too big?
  • Is there room between them?
  • Can I see across the island?
  • Does the plan give me light where I need it?

Check the view from the next room, too. Your kitchen lights should look good next to your dining room light.

How High Should the Lights Hang?

Start with 30 to 36 inches from the counter to the bottom of the light. This is a guide, not a rule for every room. The right height depends on the light and your view across the island. See Visual Comfort’s guide to pendant height.

You should be able to talk to someone across the counter without a shade in the way.

Check the gaps between the lights, too. The gap between two shades is not the same as the space between their centers.

Have your project team check the layout before the lights go in.

Pick a Look That Fits Your Kitchen

Bring photos or small samples of your cabinets, counters, and handles.

Look at them next to the lights you like.

You can use the same metal color as your handles. Or you can choose a new color that looks good with them.

Think about the shape, too. Do you want a light that stands out? Or one that blends into the room?

Ask to see a light turned on when a sample is on hand. Check how it looks from below and from where you will sit.

Check the Dimmer Before You Buy

A dimmer lets you turn the light level up or down.

If you want one, tell us at the start. Do not assume the dimmer you have will work with new lights.

Bring its model number. We can help check the details for the lights you want.

Ask:

  • Can this light be dimmed?
  • What bulb does it need?
  • Which dimmer will work with it?
  • Can it hang at the height I want?

Your electrician should check the wires, ceiling box, and support. Coast Lighting helps with light choices and product details.

Check When Your Lights Will Arrive

Choose your lights early in your remodel.

Your electrician needs time to check where they will go. You also need to know when they can arrive.

Before you order, check the:

  • Model.
  • Size.
  • Color or finish.
  • Number of lights.
  • Expected arrival date.

If you find a lower price online, bring the link. Check that it is the same light, size, and finish.

At Coast Lighting, we review lead times with you. We also label light boxes and bulbs by room. This helps your team know where each one goes.

Ask us about storage and delivery when you place your order.

  • What size lights should I put over my island?

  • How many lights do I need for a nine-foot island?

Compare two large lights with three small ones. The best choice depends on their size, how they look, and how much light your plan provides.

  • How high should island lights hang?

Start with 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Measure to the bottom of the light. Have your team check the final height for your room.
